HOW TO TAKE PART IN THE FISH FIGHT

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall launched a campaign to help change the ludicrous EU laws governing the landing of over-quota fish in the North Sea by commercial fishermen.

An incredible 40-60% of fish caught are discarded back to the sea, often dead, because they are either over the quota which is allowable to land at dock or they are species which are simply not fashionable for the plate. It seems the discards are not monitored and results in a pitiful waste of good fish.

The campaign was televised by Channel 4 back in January 2011 following Hugh’s travels around the UK meeting fishermen, retailers, conservationists, the public and politicians and has a growing number of followers and supporters.

How to take part in the fish fight?

The easiest thing to do is to do nothing and adopt a “can’t be bothered” attitude to this but for the sake of a few clicks here and there your support can make all the difference.

Boat Chandlers Guide is just one of many companies and organisations who are supporting this fish fight campaign because we can’t stand to see pointless waste and despise bureaucracy.

Changing the way we think about what fish we could put on the table will also help. Pouting, Whiting, Gurnard, Pollack, Coley, Dab and Mackerel are a few which make delicious, healthy meals. Check out the sustainable fish recipes here.
