Water sports

To think that we may have evolved from creatures that once lived their lives in the sea is not so amazing when you realise just how fascinated most of us are of water.

Although a potentially dangerous place, water can provide, aside from boating, harmless fun with water pistols to exhilarating pleasure on jet skis.

The industry is accountable for billions of pounds a year and we have all bought in to it at some time or another.

If you’ve ever ridden a motorcycle then you will know the sense of power, agility and freedom it gives from that of a car. Jet skis or PWC’s (personal watercraft) give much the same except if you fall off you won’t grind your skin to the bone and run the risk of going underneath an on coming car. However these craft aren’t without their own elements of risk and sensible safety equipment should be worn. Although you don’t need to pass a test to use one it is advisable to get some training

Water sports wouldn’t be worth mentioning if we didn’t talk about water skiing. It looks easy; it tears your arms out of their sockets and pummels your legs, that’s if you haven’t taken a dive like a Cormorant. But for those who have a gift of skimming the skin of water it’s about as naked a sport as you can get next to surfing. Fed up with skis then take the family out on a “banana or doughnut”. Again they have their share of potential hazards but with the right kit and training it’s a blast!

For those who prefer water sports without an octane fuelled power plant attached to them by a length of rope then why not settle for canoeing, kayaking or surfing.
